A homeless man was left screaming for help after his head became trapped inside a litter bin while people stood nearby taking photos and laughing.
Known locally as Tam, the 52-year-old man became stuck in the 5ft-high public bin in the Castlegate public square in Aberdeen on Sunday evening for 15 minutes.
Photos began circulating on the internet just minutes after it happened, showing the fire brigade arriving to cut him free with an electric saw.
A local who was in the Castle Bar which overlooks the square, said: 'The guy only just lost his home and is called Tam.
'He was looking for a cigarette someone had just stubbed out and thrown in the bin, but got stuck as he tried to reach for it.
'He was really screaming and shouting for help - but to be honest, most people just stood around laughing and taking pictures.'
Selma, a worker in the Castle Bar said that the man was ‘stuck fast’ for 15 minutes.
She said: 'He couldn’t move at all - his head was really stuck in the bin tight and he was shouting for help.
'The fire brigade came pretty quick and took the top off the bin, but it took at least 15 minutes and the guy was in a bit of a panic by the sound of it.'
Onlookers called 999 and Grampian Fire and Rescue workers used an electric saw to cut the top off the bin and free him just after 6pm.
The man was taken to the Aberdeen Royal Infirmary by ambulance where he was treated for facial injuries before being released later on Sunday.
A spokesman for Grampian Police said they were ‘unsure’ what the man was looking for.
